Swedish Homemade Cinnamon Rolls Recipe 


What are cinnamon rolls?


Cinnamon rolls are a sweet, delicious pastry and are traditionally served for breakfast with a hot cup of coffee. Cinnamon is an essential ingredient for cinnamon rolls preparation, as the cinnamon gives a delicious smell and good taste to them, and no one can resist the delicious taste. 


Some people also add raisins to the filling or use cream cheese frosting on top of the rolls when they are done baking. The cinnamon rolls are shaped into a log and either rolled up or cut into rounds. 


The origin of this delicious pastry is northern Europe mainly in Scandinavian countries. In Sweden they are called Kanelbullar in Denmark are known as kanelsnegl, and in Norway are known as kanelbolle. The cinnamon rolls are baked in muffin wrappers.

What are the ingredients of the cinnamon rolls?


1. Ingredients for the dough:


  • 25 g yeast
  • 50 g butter or margarine
  • 300 g milk
  • 120 g sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 800 g all-purpose flour


2- Ingredients for the filling:


  • 50 g butter or margarine
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 120 g sugar


3- Ingredients for decoration:

  • 1 egg

  • pearl sugar



How to prepare the cinnamon rolls?


1- How to prepare the dough?


  • Crumble the yeast in a bowl.
  • Melt the butter or margarine in a saucepan or in a bowl in the microwave for about 30 sec or until it melts.
  • Add the milk and heat to finger temperature, 37°C.
  • Then pour some of the liquid over the yeast and stir until it dissolves. 
  • Add the rest of the liquid, and gradually sugar, salt, and almost all the flour, and save a little bit for the baking.
  • Work the dough smoothly by hand or in a machine till the dough releases the edges of the bowl.
  • Make a ball with this dough, cover it, and leave it in a warm place for about 30 minutes until it rises.



2- How to prepare the filling?


  • Stir the butter or margarine smoothly with sugar and cinnamon until the filling mix together and keep it aside.
  • Take the dough on a workbench, after 30 minutes of rest, and knead it smoothly with the remaining flour. 
  • Roll out the dough on a workbench, about 30 x 40 cm (for 20 pieces). Spread on the filling of the butter sugar and cinnamon and roll up from the long side. Then cut the roll into approx. 2 cm wide pieces.
  • Place the pieces with the cut surface facing up on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper or in muffin wrappers.




  • Cover the rolls and let them rise for the second time for about 20 minutes. 


3- How to decorate the cinnamon rolls:



  • Brush the rolls with beaten egg and sprinkle with a little pearl sugar. 


  • Bake the rolls in the middle of the oven at 250 ° C, about 20 min or until they take the golden color. 
  • Let them cool on a wire rack under a baking sheet before packing them in a box or jar.


How to serve the cinnamon rolls?

- Serve your Cinnamon rolls with a cup of coffee for breakfast or even in the afternoon with a cup of tea.
